- Burr oak – knotty growths yield planks with these attractive whorls
- Brown oak – rarely, oak can be chocolate brown in colour
- Quarter sawn oak – streaked with silver medullary rays
- Cedar of Lebanon – natural moth repellent used to line wardrobes and drawers
- Elm – colour from straw to bronze, with pips and burrs occurring
- Tiger oak – striped with dark streaks, very unusual
- Sycamore – a pale creamy white hardwood
- Douglas fir
- Larch – grown locally on the Stourhead estate
- Olive ash – towards the centre of the tree, the wood is more coffee-coloured
- Pale ash – a very tough, open-grained wood with an attractive creamy colour
